Somaliland officials said the suicide bombers that struck on Oct. 29 were from Mogadishu. An Islamic cleric was arrested after the attack. Six Somalis were wounded in an explosion in Baidoa. Pirates hijacked a Turkish freighter.


Afghanistan

The Taliban claimed credit for the attack on the Information and Culture Ministry in Kabul. A small team assaulted the main gate and then entered the compound. Five were killed and dozens were wounded, including children in a daycare center, after the suicide bomber detonated inside the ministry.

Parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani threatened the US with suicide attacks in response to US incursions into Syria and Pakistan. “The US method and conduct, expressed by this aggression, will only be stopped by a clear-cut and unexpected response, whose grounds were set by the martyr Hussein Fahmida,” he said. Fahmida was a suicide bomber.

The US embassy in Damascus will close due to government-planned anti-US protests over the Oct. 26 raid that killed a senior al Qaeda facilitator and his staff; the embassy cited “security concerns.” Syria’s ambassador to the UN requested the Security Council take action to prevent future US incursions.


Pakistan

Five security officials were killed and 11 were wounded in a suicide attack in Bannu. The local Taliban in the Mamoond region in Bajaur Agency surrendered to jirga and said they would not provide shelter to foreigners or fight the government. The government summoned the US ambassador to protest strikes in the tribal areas.

Convicted Bali bomber Amrozi told a CNN that he had “no regrets whatsoever,” about the attacks and said others would strike again. “My message for Australians; don’t you come to places like that ever again. I’m sure that my colleagues will bomb it again.” The bombers also urged supporters to kill those who executed them.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said hatred of the US runs deep. Iran opened a new naval base east of the Strait of Hormuz; an admiral said Iran could “prevent the entry of any enemy naval units” into the Persian Gulf. President Ahmadinejad blamed the US for the world’s economic crisis.

The coordinated attacks hit the presidential palace, a UN compound, and the Ethiopian Consulate in Somaliland, and an intelligence headquarters in Puntland. The attacks were carried out by Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked terror group.
