Al Qaeda

Nine terrorists who trained under Fazul Abdullah Mohammed have been deported from Ethiopia to Kenya. The men were members of al Qaeda in East Africa, and trained and served in Somalia. One man admitted to acting as Fazul’s driver. Kenya has released the men from custody.



Philippines

Ustadz Yasser Igasan is reported to be the new leader of Abu Sayyaf. Moro Islamic Liberation Front commander Ameril Umbra Kato issued a videotape via YouTube; the military said the video highlights his insecurities. President Arroyo said there would be no memorandum of agreement on a Moro homeland.



Afghanistan

The Taliban refused to negotiate with the Afghan government. “We reject an offer for negotiation by the Afghan’s puppet and slave President Hamid Karzai,” Mullah Baradar said. The US notified Pakistan of an airstrike near the Afghan-Pakistani border.

A suicide bomber killed five Pakistanis while attempting to assassinate the chief of the Awami National Party in Charsadda. Baitullah Mehsud visited several areas in South Waziristan. The UN ordered its staff to send children home after declaring Islamabad unsafe.

A US appeals court overturned terrorism convictions for a Yemeni cleric and his personal assistant, claiming the two men did not receive a fair trial. A civilian was killed in an IED attack in Baidoa. Fifteen Mogadishu policemen were arrested for criminal activity. The Ethiopian opposition called for a withdrawal from Somalia. Kenyan police arrested a maritime official days after he gave reporters information about the hijacked arms freighter off Somalia’s coast.

Thirteen Iraqis were killed and 49 were wounded in two suicide attacks outside of Shia mosques in Baghdad. The Iraqi government has assumed control over 45,000 members of the Sons of Iraq in Baghdad.
