The US Embassy has reported two US journalists who left to vacation in the north near Tripoli have been missing since Oct. 1. President Michel Sleiman said the Lebanese Armed Forces needed to be equipped with advanced weaponry in order to confront terrorism and preserve the peace in Lebanon.


Algeria

Somalia

Mortar exchanges between Shabaab and Somali forces in Mogadishu claimed 20 killed and 35 wounded. Tribesmen in Gedo vowed to expel the Islamic Courts from the region. Shabaab took a cut of the ransom money paid for a Spanish ship. Sheikh Sharif Ahmed said the Islamic Courts has not yet implemented the ceasefire.

Coalition forces captured 16 al Qaeda operatives in northern Iraq. Police detained 10 insurgents in Mosul. Coalition forces captured five Hezbollah Brigades operatives in Al Kut and a Special Groups fighter in Baghdad. A US Soldier was killed in Mosul.




Afghanistan

US and Afghan forces killed 43 Taliban during fighting in the Qalat district in Zabul province. An ISAF soldier accidentally killed a civilian during an escalation of force incident in Paktika. Germany has extended its mandate to operate in Afghanistan by 14 months.

Iran

The US military denied an airplane carrying US military and civilian personnel was forced to land in Iran after Iranian news agencies reported eight Americans were captured and released. The plane was later reported to be a civilian Hungarian Falcon jet.


United States

A federal judge ordered the government to immediately release 17 al Qaeda-linked Uighers from Guantanamo Bay into the United States since they are no longer considered enemy combatants. China is demanding the US release them back to China. The US fears the men will be tortured.
