Afghanistan

Afghan intelligence said it foiled a plot to free Taliban fighters from the Pol-i-Charki prison outside of Kabul. Three guards were arrested for aiding in the plot. Nine Taliban and al Qaeda fighters, including two Taliban commanders, were killed in southern Afghanistan. Thirty Taliban fighters were captured.

Sudan

The US warned that al Qaeda in the Land of the Two Niles threatened to attack US citizens and allies in Sudan. Embassy officials warned staff against using a Khartoum cafe popular with Westerners and wealthy Sudanese. Sudan denies al Qaeda has a presence in the country.

Hezbollah

Iran has sent a new Qods Force officer to replace Hezbollah’s top military commander in Lebanon. Mohammad Rida Zahidi, also known as Hassan Mahdawy, has taken over Hezbollah’s operations and coordination with Syria after Imad Mughniyeh was assassinated in Damascus in February 2008. Zahidi is also assigned to set up terror camps in southern Lebanon.


The Taliban

The Taliban is financing its southern operations through hawalas, or Islamic money exchanges, in the United Arab Emirates through Kandahari and Pakistani brokers. Mullah Abdul Razaq, a former minister of interior affairs in the Taliban regime with extensive connections in the UAE, is a major player in the money laundering.
