Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed credit for the Sept. 14 attack on a military convoy in the Zerouate region, where 12 soldiers were kidnapped and subsequently beheaded. The attack was “carried out to avenge the oppressed prisoners in the Mauritanian jails” and send a message to the Mauritanian junta. The terror group also warned its followers to only trust statements released by the Al Fajr Media Center.
