In a statement on a Web site, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed credit for the kidnapping of 12 soldiers. A politician said the military launched an operation in an attempt to seal off the region and prevent the al Qaeda fighters from fleeing into neighboring Mali or Algeria.
