A decision to deploy an additional 10,000 troops to Afghanistan will not be made until after the US presidential election.

Al Qaeda leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys has taken control of the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia. Five children were among those killed during fighting in Mogadishu. Ethiopian troops have re-entered Beledweyne. Somali and Ethiopian forces have set up bases in the Lower Shabellle region while the Islamic Courts controls Johwar, the provincial capital.

Iraqi and Coalition forces captured seven al Qaeda operatives in Diyala and Tamim provinces. Iraqi security forces killed a suicide bomber in Fallujah and detained three “gunmen” in Karbala, four al Qaeda fighters in Kirkuk, and 10 insurgents throughout Iraq. Eight people including a child were injured in Lahj when police opened fire and used tear gas on southern protesters demanding an end to the trials of three opposition party leaders and the release of hundreds detained after prior protests.



Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed or wounded more than 30 Taliban during clashes in Farah province. Three captured al Qaeda operatives said they infiltrated Afghanistan via Pakistan. The French have taken over security responsibility for Kapisa province. The UN stated Kunar province is “nearly-poppy free.”


Pakistan

Prime Minister Gilani was told more than 8,000 foreign fighters are present in the tribal areas. Gilani met with tribal elders to plea for support in ending “militancy.” Omar Khalid, the leader of the Mohmand Taliban said his group “arrested” members of the rival Shah Sahib group, along with two intelligence personnel. Al Qaeda

Mustafa Abu Yazid, al Qaeda’s commander in Afghanistan, said a Saudi al Qaeda member carried out the suicide attack on the Danish embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan. Yazid, who spoke in an interview with Pakistan’s Geo TV, also confirmed al Qaeda was behind the 9/11 attacks.


Iraq

US forces captured a Hezbollah Brigades propaganda specialist and a Mahdi Army fighter in Baghdad. Two security contractors and eight civilians were killed in an ambush in Mosul. A senior police officer was killed in an IED attack in Kirkuk. The Baghdad Police College graduated 1,698 new police officers.



Yemen

A Yemeni court imposed a ban at the trial of three senior Socialist party leaders charged with undermining state security by organizing demonstrations. Security forces killed dozens of citizens during a year-long series of protests. The charges against Hassan Baoum, Yahya al Shouaibi, and Ali al Gharib carry the death penalty.


Afghanistan

The Taliban took control of the remote district of Ajiristan in Ghazni province. Four policemen and four security guards were killed during attacks in Helmand and Zabul provinces. Fifteen Taliban were reported killed in Helmand and 20 were killed in Khost. The Taliban freed two Turkish workers.
