The US Spreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, has ruled that al Qaeda operatives and terrorists held in detention at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have the right to challenge their detention in federal court. “The laws and Constitution are designed to survive, and remain in force, in extraordinary times,” Justice Anthony Kennedy said. “Liberty and security can be reconciled; and in our system reconciled within the framework of the law.” The “nation will live to regret what the court has done today,” Justice Antonin Scalia said.
