NATO downplayed the prospects of launching a major offensive to dislodge the Taliban from seven towns in the Arghandab district north of Kandahar city. Seven hundred Afghan troops have been deployed to the region from Kabul. Patrols through the area do not show a Taliban presence. Afghan and NATO forces killed 30 Taliban during major fighting in Khost province.
