Islamic insurgents killed six Somali soldiers and a child after the group attacked and overran two military bases north of Mogadishu but withdrew three hours later. Residents report heavy fighting near a military base in northern Mali’s Aguelhok village. The village is 90 miles from the Algerian border and has been plagued by a low-intensity insurgency and banditry for more than a year. Tuareg insurgents in Niger denied holding Malian soldiers taken hostage last week by another Tuareg group in Mali.

Austria has denied sending the elite Cobra counterterrorist unit to Mali to help locate and rescue two Austrian nationals kidnapped by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb along the Algeria-Tunisia border more than a month ago.
