Saudi Arabia

Saudi security forces arrested 56 al Qaeda operatives for plotting attacks inside the kingdom. The operatives were said to have received instructions from Ayman al Zawahiri, al Qaeda’s second in command, and were in the final stages of conducting attacks.


Pakistan

Clashes between local tribesman and the Lashkar-e-Islam in Khyber agency resulted in 12 dead. The Lashkar-e-Islam raided the town of Shaikhan and set fire to CD shops as well as video centers, TV sets, VCRs, and cassettes. Security forces arrested three Taliban operatives in Swat, including a suicide cell leader.

US airstrike hits al Qaeda safe house in Somalia

Missile attack occurred right on the southern border with Kenya. The target has yet to be identified, but three senior al Qaeda operatives are known to shelter in Somalia and have been targeted in the past. Hassan Turki ran a terror camp in the region.


Afghanistan

Twenty Taliban fighters were killed during a Coalition raid in Sangin, Helmand province. The elderly governor of Helmand province, Assadullah Wafa, has been moved from his post. Afghanistan’s intelligence chief has rejected an assessment by the US who said 10 percent of the country is under Taliban control.

Somalia

Clashes in Mogadishu between Somali troops and Shabaab resulted in 17 killed and 80 wounded. Government troops broke into the Shabelle Radio office in Mogadishu, arrested the station director, and seized equipment. Forces loyal to the governor and deputy governor of the Middle Shabelle region clashed near the provincial capital of Jowhar.


Pakistan

A Taliban suicide bomber attacked a tribal meeting in Kohat, 40 were killed and more than 40 wounded. A Taliban suicide bomber killed two and wounded 24 in Bajaur on March 1. Three Taliban fighters were detained in Swat.



Afghanistan

The Taliban destroyed a second cell tower in Kandahar province, and possibly a third in Uruzgan province. A Canadian solider was killed in an IED attack in Kandahar. Afghan and Coalition forces detained six Taliban in a raid in Zabul province.
