The Taliban murdered a tribesman accused as serving as a “US spy” in North Waziristan. Dutch police arrested a Pakistani man who was plotting to carry out attacks in the name of Baitullah Mehsud. Al Qaeda leader Mohammad Rahim al Afghani was captured in Lahore, Pakistan in August 2007.

Police arrest dozens after clashes in Iraqi city

A secondary school in Kandahar attended by 1,200 students was burned to the ground by suspected Taliban terrorists. Another cellular tower was severely damaged during an insurgent attack, this time in eastern Laghman province. NATO members could offer more than 1,000 new troops for Afghanistan at the alliance’s April 2-4 summit in Bucharest.


Algeria

Negotiations have begun between al Qaeda kidnappers and Algerian authorities over the demand that incarcerated insurgent members, Amari Saifi alias Abderrezak El Para, and a group of jailed Tunisian insurgents be released in exchange for the two kidnapped Austrian nationals. The al Qaeda group threatened to kill the captives if their demands are not met.

Iraqi security forces detained 15 al Qaeda operatives during three separate operations. Iraqi police captured three members of an IED cell operating in and around Kirkuk and Hawijah. US soldiers seized an EFP cache in northwestern Baghdad. The Iraqi Army said Mosul’s Archbishop died of natural causes while in al Qaeda captivity.

The Austrian government refused to meet the demands put forth by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb for the release of two Austrian nationals held hostage by the terror group.
