Eight police were killed after their convoy was ambushed by fighters from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in El Oued province. Algerian security forces killed an al Qaeda leader and arrested six of his associates. The seven operatives were believed to be behind the December bombings at a court building and UN offices in Algiers, and an attack on foreign oil workers.
