Five soldiers were killed and 10 wounded during an ambush by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb forces in the town of Ain Al Hamam in Tizi Ouzou province. Five more soldiers were wounded in an IED strike in the town of Ait Yahia, south of the city of Tizi Ouzou.
Ahsan al Haq, a former Pakistani Army major and al Qaeda camp commander, was captured in Lahore. He was behind the Sargodha suicide bombings last fall.
The operation is subordinate to Operation Phantom Phoenix, a corps-sized operation focused on al Qaeda in the north. Twenty al Qaeda emirs have been reported killed or captured.
