Eight soldier were killed after Muslim insurgents ambushed an Army convoy with an IED and small-arms fire in Narathiwat province. Police are conducting a manhunt for the six insurgents who escaped from a local prison in Narathiwat.


Yemen

Two people were killed and 16 others were wounded in clashes between security forces and demonstrators in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden. Iraqi security forces captured 21 insurgents in Baghdad and seven al Qaeda operatives in Karbala. Coalition forces detained 13 al Qaeda operatives during raids in central and northern Iraq. Al Qaeda bombed a girls’ school in Baqubah. Coalition forces killed a Special Groups operative in the Baghdad area.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 10 police in a small-arms attack in Kandahar province. There was a suicide attack in Helmand province. Two Dutch soldiers and two Afghan soldiers were killed in friendly fire incidents in Uruzgan province. Afghan police and soldiers detained three Taliban fighters in Nangarhar Province.

Taliban commander killed in clash in South Waziristan

Afghan Taliban leader Saifur Rahman Mansour, who was commander of Taliban forces during Operation Anaconda, was killed during a clash with the military in the Pakistani tribal agency. The military is negotiating with the Taliban in North Waziristan.

Saudi Arabia began construction of a border wall with Yemen. Yemeni trafficking of children, weapons, and banned products is substantial. In December, the Kingdom arrested a terror cell led by Yemeni who had trained at the al Farouq camp in Afghanistan. Eight Chinese-made missiles were smuggled from Yemen by the cell in preparation for attacks.

Thailand

A government official was murdered by Muslim insurgents in Narathiwat province. The Army commander-in-chief will visit the southern provinces to review the intelligence network in the wake arrests due to leaks to insurgents.
