The Awakening, al Qaeda clash in Iraq

Fighting between the Awakening movements and al Qaeda in Iraq spiked over the weekend. At least four high-profile engagements and bombings occurred in Baghdad, Anbar, Ninewa, and Diyala provinces.



Iraq

Iraqi tribesmen killed 22 al Qaeda fighters in in Diyala province. Coalition forces killed six al Qaeda operatives and detained 23 during operations in central and northern Iraq. Iraqi Security Forces killed one insurgent, detained 48, and defused 13 roadside bombs in Baghdad.

Turkish fighter-bombers struck PKK positions inside Iraq. The nightime raid hit positions close to the border with Turkey and the Qandil mountain, which straddles the Iraq-Iran border. The PKK is headquartered in Qandil and runs training camps in the mountains.

Philippine troops killed Mobin Abdurajak, a leader of the Abu Sayyaf Group, in a raid on his hideout in Tawi-Tawi. He was wanted for kidnapping 21 people from the Malaysian resort island of Sipadan in 2000. Negotiations with MILF to create a Muslim homeland have stopped due to issues with economic control.
