Marines attacked an Abu Sayyaf camp in Basilan, sparking close gunbattles. Forty-two Abu Sayyaf fighters, including a suspect in the beheadings of 10 Marines in July, were killed along with 15 Marines, including five officers. Thirty Abu Sayyaf fighters were believed to have been wounded.


Turkey

Two men, a Turk and a Palestinian, hijacked an airplane in Turkey and demanded to fly to Syria or Iran. One of the men claimed to be a member of al Qaeda. The hijacking ended after the plane landed in Turkey, and the pilots and the majority of the passengers escape via the safety exits.
