US recruiting Sunnis for security roles




Iran

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has replaced the leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, appointing the former chief as his special military adviser. IAEA director Mohammed Elbaradei said Iran may have its last chance to come clean on its nuclear program.



Pakistan

The Taliban issued terms for the release of over 150 soldiers captured in South Waziristan. Ten paramilitary troops were kidnapped in Mohmand Agency. Two suicide attacks in Tank and Bajaur killed eight and wounded 15. Musharraf may negotiate with the Taliban-supporting MMA political party in a bid to retain the presidency.


Thailand

Muslim insurgents killed a policeman and two civilians in Pattani and Narathiwat provinces. Police are searching for two suspects in a bombing in Songkhla province.


Afghanistan

Over 70 Taliban were killed and 20 captured during fighting in Ghazni and Helmand provinces. South Korea insists it did not pay a ransom to the Taliban to release its kidnapped citizens.


Flashpoint Afghanistan: Musa Qala

The district of Musa Qala in Helmand province is once again catching on fire as Operation Palk Meher is underway. Musa Qala was the scene heavy fighting between the Taliban and Afghan and NATO forces last year, and the Taliban gained control of the district after a peace deal was signed.

As US focus shifts to eastern Afghanistan, the conventional Army moves into new territory prompting al Qaeda to call for a jihad within a jihad. Nuristan, Nangahar, Kunar, and Laghman provinces are the scene of heavy fighting this year.
