Intelligence agencies blamed today’s dual suicide attacks in Rawalpindi on “security lapses.” The Taliban freed 14 troops captured in Mohmand and Bajaur agencies. Two civilians and a cadet were kidnapped in North Waziristan. An MMA senator demanded troops withdraw from the Mehsud tribal agencies in South Waziristan, while another soldier was killed in the agency.
Afghan National Security Forces captured the provincial Taliban commanders of Paktika and Nangarhar, and a Taliban leader and seven fighters in Panjshir. “Several militants” were killed during an operation in Ghazni. The Taliban are back in control of the Panjwaii and Zari districts in Kandahar province.
Pakistani military and intelligence officers were the direct target of two suicide attacks in the military garrison city of Rawalpindi. Suicide bombers targeted a bus carrying Inter Services Intelligence personnel and the Royal Artillery bazaar.
