Beheadings, cease-fire, fighting in Swat

Just days after Maulana Fazlullah’s Taliban conducted a suicide attack on Pakistani troops, a one-day operation was launched, followed by a cease-fire, beheadings, and more fighting.


Somalia

Ethiopian and Somali forces are battling the al Qaeda linked Shabaab, formerly the Islamic Courts, in Mogadishu for the second day in a row. Protesters are rioting in Mogadishu, demanding the removal of Ethiopian troops. The mayor has warned civilians to flee the fighting.


Thailand

A Muslim man was beheaded in Pattani province. Two Muslims were killed in Yala province. One woman was killed and 12 civilians wounded in a bombing at shop in Narathiwat province. Three soldiers were wounded in an IED attack in Narathiwat.


Turkey

Turkish troops killed 20 PKK terrorists during a major operation in eastern Turkey, far from the Iraqi border. A bomb blast in Izmit wounded three anti-PKK demonstrators. The government said both diplomatic and military options to deal with the PKK in northern Iraq are still on the table.


Iraq

Seven Sunni and three Shia sheikhs were kidnapped after returning from a reconciliation meeting. The interior ministry denied the Muqdadiya police chief and seven of his bodyguards were kidnapped earlier this week. Thirteen insurgents were captured in Doura; another six insurgents were captured southeast of Baghdad. Six al Qaeda operatives were captured in raids nationwide.

Yemen

Yemeni al Qaeda leader Jamal Badawi, who was behind the USS Cole bombing in October 2000, was released from Yemeni custody. Bawadi surrendered to the police in mid-October.


Pakistan

The military and the Taliban have agreed to a cease fire in Swat. The Taliban beheaded six security forces personnel and seven civilians in Swat. The leader of the Lal Masjid said he supported Swat’s Maulana Fazlullah but has no links to his organization.

Iraq

Muqtada al Sadr may call off the cease fire with the Mahdi Army. The Islamic Army of Iraq killed 16 al Qaeda in a clash in Salahadin province. Al Qaeda targeted the headquarters of the 1920s Revolution Brigades in Miqdadiyah in Diyala province with a suicide bomber. Coalition forces captured 15 al Qaeda operatives.


Algeria

The Algerian security forces killed 15 al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb fighters and captured seven during fighting over the past seven days. The fighting occurred on the Tunisian border and uncovered several hideouts and large weapons caches.


Iraq

Iraqi special forces captured two Mahdi Army leaders. US forces killed seven al Qaeda operatives and captured 31. Nine al Qaeda fighters were captured along with an anti-aircraft gun in Babil province.




Syria

Satellite imagery shows Syria is dismantling a suspected, partly built nuclear reactor. Syria may have been preparing for an Israeli attack two weeks ago.


Iran

The US has imposed sanctions on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, three of Iran’s largest banks, and eight citizens involved in weapons trade and supporting terrorist groups. Iranians are beginning to complain about economic setbacks.
