NATO airstrikes killed 13 Taliban in Helmand proivince, while 4 Taliban were killed when their roadside bomb detonated prematurely. Two Canadians were killed in an IED attack in Kandahar. Australia is set to send an additional 450 troops, including 300 Special Forces.


Pakistan

Pakistan’s intelligence agencies oppose ‘cracking down’ on students of Lal Masjid mosque. The PML president negotiating with teh Lal Masjid clerics offered to rebuild mosques. The Religious Affairs Minister admitted to letting Ghazi off on terrorism charges. The “Wana region is now virtually free of Uzbeks,” according to a agency administrator.


Thailand

Muslim insurgents shot then burned the body of a Buddhist woman in Yala. Muslim insurgent detonated a bomb in a Yala market, wounding seven.


Somalia

The Hawiye clan, which supports the Islamic Courts, claimed 1,086 people have been killed and 4,334 wounded since the fighting began in Mogadishu. Four more were killed as fighting resumed in the capital. Ethiopia is holding 41 terror suspects from 17 countries. Eritrea denied U.S. claims it is supporting the insurgency.

Afghanistan

Eight Afghan soldiers and an unknown number of Taliban were killed during fighting in Zabul province over the past 2 days. The Taliban murdered 2 truck drivers who were supplying U.S. bases in Paktika and kidnapped 3 others. The Afghan Army has moved a battalion of troops into Helmand province to support Operation Achilles.


Thailand

Muslim insurgents shot up a pickup truck carrying students and other passengers in the southern province of Yala. Three were killed and 7 wounded in the attack. On the same day, a host of shootings and roadside bombings occurred in Yala.


Morocco

Moroccan police killed one terrorist while three others detonated their explosives after police conducted raids in the capital of Casablanca. The bombers were members of a cell whose leader blew himself up in a cafe in early March.



Algeria

An attack force of about 50 al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters ambushed an Algerian Army convoy heading for operations against the group in Eastern Algeria. Nine soldiers and at least 4 al Qaeda were killed in the fighting.
