The Taliban killed 5 UN workers in a roadside bombing in Kandahar, while the Taliban conducted attacks in the northern provinces of Kapisa and Herat. The U.S. claimed Iranian made weapons have been intercepted inside Afghanistan.


Pakistan

Lal Masjid clerics suspended negotiations with the government after the discovery of “aerial surveillance and spraying of suffocating gas on the mosque.” The Taliban issued letters in North Waziristan which ban drugs and alcohol, and claim murders will be tried under the Pakistan Penal Code, not sharia. Al Qaeda

Abu Omar al Baghdadi, the leader of al Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq, released an audio tape pleading with the Islamic Army in Iraq to mend the rift between the two groups. Baghdadi also claims Iraq is a “‘university of terrorism’ producing highly qualified warriors since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.”


United Kingdom

Britain is forming an “inter-departmental group” which “will bring together research, information and communications units to generate material to rebut extremist ideology aimed at the media.” The group is directed at al Qaeda use of the Internet and “new media.”


Philippines

Abu Sayyaf kidnapped 7 men on Jolo Island. The fighting between the Philippine Army and the Moro National Liberation Front is intensifying on Jolo Island, with 17 MNLF fighters, 3 soldiers and 1 civilian killed over the past 3 days.

Afghanistan

The Taliban killed almost 700 civilians last year. NATO claimed “several key extremist leaders from the ongoing insurgency” were killed during attacks last week in Helmand province. A Taliban suicide bomber killed 10 police in the northern city of Kunduz.



Pakistan

The MQM party held a large rallyin Islamabad opposing the “threat of ‘Kalashnikov Sharia™ of Islamabad™s Lal Masjid clerics.” The Lal Masjid clerics vowed to stop the sale of alcohol in the capitol. The Ahmadzai Wazir tribe promised not to shelter Uzbeks in South Waziristan. The Taliban claims “foreigners” are leaving North Waziristan.

Thailand

Muslim insurgents shut down the rail service from Yala province into Malaysia after wounding three civilians on a train. In Narathiwat, insurgents also murdered a 70 year old Buddhist farmer and burned his body.


Philippines

Philippine troops overran 2 Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) camps and killed 8 fighters during an assault on Jolo Island. MNLF commander Habier Malik and several hundred fighters retreated into the jungles with Philippine troops in pursuit.


Algeria

Five soldiers were killed and 4 wounded in separate attacks by al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb fighters. The Algerian government protested Saturday’s terror alert by the local embassay.


Somalia

Insurgents killed two Somali soldiers in Mogadishu. The second female of the pro-Islamic Courts Hawiye clan has accused Ethiopian troops of rape. Somali police intercepted a truckload of weapons en route to Mogadishu from Kismayo.


Afghanistan

NATO and Afghan forces killed 16 Taliban and wounded 10 in fighting in Paktika. An Arab al Qaeda member was among them. Six more Taliban were killed in Helmand’s Sangin district. German reconnaissance planes are in operation in Afghanistan.


Pakistan

President Musharraf ruled out the possibility of a joint U.S. & Pakistani operation in the NWFP. Lal Masjid leader Aziz calls for all Muslims to enforce sharia. The Taliban attacked a CD shop in Islamabad and assaulted gamblers in Bajaur.



Algeria

The U.S. Embassy in Algiers warned of potential suicide attacks in the capital and has restricted the movement of its personnel. “According to unconfirmed information, there may be attacks in Algiers planned for April 14, 2007 in areas that may include the Algiers Central Post Office … and Algerian State Television Headquarters, ENTV.., among others.” […]


Morocco

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up while attempting to attack the U.S. consulate and cultural center in Casablanca. Police are looking for a third bomber. Three suicide bombers killed themselves on Wednesday as police conducted raids in Casablanca.


Thailand

Two Thai rangers were wounded in an IED attack, while Thai soldiers killed 2 Muslim teens in Narathiwat province. Muslim insurgents torched 4 cell towers and a school in Pattani province.


Afghanistan

NATO and Afghan forces killed 24 Taliban during a strike in Garmsir district in Helmand province. A suicide bomber killed 7 Afghan border police in Khost. The Taliban aired a video of 2 captured French aid workers.



Philippines

Two Philippine soldiers were killed and 10 wounded in a clash with Abu Sayyaf on Jolo Island. The military stated an MNLF commander is providing aid to Abu Sayyaf on Jolo.
