Coalition forces killed 12 al Qaeda operatives and detained 13 during operations in central and northern Iraq. Iraqi Security Forces arrested 20 insurgents a leader of al Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq in Baghdad. Iraqi and US forces captured seven insurgents in Kirkuk. A car bomb killed six and wounded 16 in Baiji.



Pakistan

The military said 230 Taliban have been killed and 150 arrested during the Swat operation, while Fazlullah’s fighters still control regions in the north and east of the district. Locals are forming “defence committees” in Swat. One Taliban fighter and a policeman were killed in a clash at a checkpoint in Charsadda city.


Somalia

Shabaab has taken control of the town of Bulo-Burde in Hiran. Ethiopian forces withdrew from a strategic neighborhood in Mogadishu. Somali police arrested Sheikh Yusuf Mohamed Barrow, a former Islamic Courts leader and now the director of Mogadishu-based Noble Quran Radio.

Twelve Taliban, including a commander, have been killed in the opening round of fighting at Musa Qala. Afghan and NATO forces defeated Taliban ambushes in Farah and Helmand provinces.
