Security forces detained hundreds of political opponents, lawyers and members of the media; politicians detained include Imran Khan and Javed Hashmi. Former ISI chief Hamid Gul, the architect of the Taliban, was also arrested. The Taliban released over 240 soldiers captured in North Waziristan in exchange for 29 Taliban prisoners. The scheduled January 2008 elections will likely be postponed.
