Afghanistan

Fighting in eastern Afghanistan resulted in over two dozen Taliban fighters and four NATO soldiers killed. A clash between Afghan forces and the Taliban in Qal-e-Naw on Friday resulted in 20 Taliban fighters and seven Afghan troops killed.

The Pak-Afghan peace jirga agreed to fight the Taliban and al Qaeda but is prepared to follow the fighting with negotiations and reconciliation. The North and South Waziristan tribes boycotted the jirga. The Taliban beheaded two “Afghan spies” near Miramshah in North Waziristan.


Turkey

Twelve Turkish soldiers were wounded in a roadside bomb attack conducted by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The attack occurred near the Iraqi border, and Turkish troops have launched an operation in an attempt to capture the bombers.

Afghanistan

Four Taliban were killed and two captured during two assaults on Firebase Anaconda in Uruzgan province on Saturday. Five Canadian soldiers were lightly wounded in an IED attack in Kandahar. The Taliban claimed it will release two South Korean hostages.


Thailand

Muslim insurgents ambushed security forces in at least six locations in Yala province from Friday night to Saturday morning, injuring one soldier. Police and the army detained eight suspected Muslim insurgents in Narathiwat province.

The military is deploying an additional 1,000 troops to Sulu to battle the MNLF and Abu Sayyaf as the death toll from this week’s fighting reached 57. MNLF threatened to retaliate if the military does not withdraw its troops from Sulu. MILF denied aiding Abu Sayyaf in Basilan.
