Algeria

A suicide bomber in a truck packed with explosives killed 10 soldiers and wounded 35. The bomber attacked a military camp about 50 miles southeast of Algiers on the opening day of the Africa Games. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb claimed responsibility for the strike.


Lebanon

Seven members of Fatah al Islam surrendered as army troops prepare for the final assault on the Nahr al Bared Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon. A sniper killed a soldier, while over 150 Palestinian civilians fled the camp.



Thailand

The prime minister spent the night in Yala’s Ban-nang Sata district, a “red zone” where Muslim insurgents are active. Twelve suspected insurgents were detained during a raid by 200 security forces in a village in Narathiwat province.


Philippines

Fourteen Philippine Marines were killed after being ambushed by 300 Abu Sayyaf fighters on Basilan island. Ten Marines were found beheaded; nine more were wounded. The Marines were searching for a kidnapped Catholic priest in MILF-controlled territory.

The Lal Majsid has been cleared and operations are over. All illegal buildings built at the compound will be destroyed. The Taliban-supporting Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal political party will hold a three-day mourning period. Fighting in Peshawar, Battagram, and Kohat resulted in one soldier killed and 19 wounded.

Al Qaeda

Ayman al Zawahiri issued a 20-minute audiotape, threatening to retaliate against Britain for honoring the novelist Salman Rushdie, the author of The Satanic Verses. U.S. intelligence indicates an al Qaeda cell is preparing to attack inside the country.


Thailand

Police have taken measures to secure Bangkok after receiving intelligence Muslim insurgents would attack the Asia Cup. Five soldiers were wounded in an IED attack in Pattani province.


Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed 19 civilians while targeting a NATO patrol in a market in Uruzgan province. Thirteen children were among those killed, and eight Dutch soldiers were wounded in the strike. Two Canadian soldiers were wounded in an IED attack on their tank in Kandahar province.


Somalia

Four insurgent bombings killed two civilians in Mogadishu’s Bakara market. Five police, including a commander, were killed in an attack on a police stations south of the capital. Somali troops arrested 40 worshippers at a mosque while another five were wounded in a hand grenade attack south of Mogadishu.
