Pakistan

al Qaeda command has regrouped in western Pakistan (also see “The Fall of Waziristan.”) Pakistani sources say the US is calling for an offensive in Waziristan. Over 50 suspects have been arrested in the Quetta court bombing attack.


Thailand

Eight were killed and over 50 wounded in over 50 near simultaneous bombing, arson and other attacks throughout four provinces in southern Thailand. Several bombs were discovered in a department store, and two schools were burned.

Sixty-five Indians were killed in a bombing of a train heading to Pakistan. Two suitcases filled with explosives have been discovered. Indian security expert B Raman notes the similarities to the Mumbai and Malegaon attacks, and suspects the attack is meant to derail the Indian-Pakistani peace talks.

A US CH-47 helicopter crashed in Zabul province, killing 8 and injuring 14. Early indications are the helo went down due to engine failure. As Sahab, al Qaeda’s production company, released a videotape of a suicide bombing and Taliban military commander Mullah Dadullah endorsing the tactic.


Iran

Iran denies Muqtada al-Sadr is in country. The nuclear enrichment program will not be stopped, according to spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini. The IRGC will hold military exercises just prior to the UN decision on Iran’s nuclear program.
