The Iraqi Army killed over 250 of what appears to be a mixed Sunni/Shia cult/insurgent group near Najaf. A US helicopter was brought down in the fighting, killing 2. Mahdi Army leaders are said to be fleeing to Iran. Over 1,500 policemen were fired in the Iraqi province of Diyala for failing to fight.
