Iraq

Curfews have been imposed in Baghdad and Mosul. Eight insurgents were killed in Mosul, 2 wounded and 21 arrested after the Iraqi Army defeated a “complex attack.” Eighteen insurgents were captured in Baghdad, and car bombs were discovered. Fourteen bodies were found near Baghdad.

North Korea

A test indicates North Korea did attempt a nuclear detonation: “We don’t think they were trying to fake a nuclear test, but it may have been a nuclear fizzle.” The United Nations Security Council will vote on sanctions on Saturday.


Pakistan

Eight al Qaeda were arrested for plotting the Islamabad and Rawalpindi attacks. Syed Saleem Shahzad reports this was part of a coup attempt. Police arrested a man plotting bomb attacks in Lahore on Eid. The suspect is from Wana, South Waziristan. Two bombs were detonated in Quetta and one in Peshawar.


Somalia

The U.S. and Ethiopia are planning to interdict terrorists seeking a safe haven in Somalia. The Islamic Courts claim they haven’t threatened Ethiopia. The ICU is also “infuriated” by the UN withdrawal of foreign staff from southern and central Somalia.
